What makes daddy a hero?

With Father's Day sneaking up on us I took a moment to ask my children what makes their daddy a hero. I know what makes him a hero to me (his never-ending patience, ability to know exactly when mommy needs a break, hard work ethic, unconditional love, and how he can still play with them like he's a little boy) but it was definitely interesting to hear from the perspective of my little ones. Straight from the mouths of my guys:

Connor: "Because he helps people and he holds onto me on the ladder when we hung up that flower. He just does really good stuff like helping me figure out how to take the track apart and put together my lego castle."

Jackson: "Sometimes he puts masks on, like batman and spiderman."

Interesting to see what makes someone a hero when you are 5 and 2. No matter what their reasons, they definitely love their daddy.

Give me a break from our Spring Break!

Sorry for the delayed postings - we are on Spring Break as I'm sure most of you are and I for one am looking forward to getting back to the norm. Spring Break for the NWB team consisted of tagging along on hubby's business trip and spending the majority of our time trapped in a small hotel room with no vehicle to escape. I love my boys but they are bored and thus driving mommy crazy. I don't think the lack of sleep is doing me any favors either. Add to that the fact that we lost power in our hotel for 8+ hours, had to move rooms due to a strange, disgusting overflowing bathroom sink, and that the one attraction we planned on visiting was closed for flood damage - this one has been a winner. We did embark on some crazy trips to a local park, Target, Old Navy, and of course we threw in a little Marble Slab to top off the fun. By the way - Marble Slab now offers Nerds as a topping choice! I was obsessed with Nerds blizzards and when they did away with that option it was deeply depressing - now I can have birthday cake ice cream mixed with Nerds! Seriously over the moon about that!!

AND- back to the point. How I long for the normal rush of day to day in our home. Breakfast and backpacks, school and home cooked dinners - we are headed home now, soooo it's not too far away. Our family is planning a real spring vacation in a couple weeks. We are still debating between a staycation or a trip to pigeon forge. I will let you know once we hammer out the details. In the meantime - next week we will get back to the normal posting schedule. How was everyone else's spring break? Did you encounter any adventures and if you went to Disney DON'T tell me - I will be way too jealous!

And the verdict is......

I have to say it - I TOLD YOU SO. This is an example of Mama knows best (even if she didn't necessarily want to). It's official we are soon to welcome another batch of testosterone to the NWB clan. While there may never be a chick flick seen in this home again. While I won't have a manicure partner. And while I won't get to play Barbies instead of Batman and trains. I'm pretty excited for another little guy. Honestly I probably wouldn't know what to do with a girl aside from how to dress her. I do really want to get to dress a girl. Other than feeling pretty outnumbered - I'm glad to have another little man in our family. I had already bought a few little boy outfits (nothing girl), so I think I knew it in my gut. I'm excited to start on the nursery, although I will miss having my girly office. It was the one spot in the house that was feminine. A room dedicated to a tiny bundle of joy is far better anyhow! So that's the update. It's a boy - due August 5th!!!

Boy or Girl?

I'm headed to the doctor so in just a few hours we will know if I'm about to be outnumbered 4 to 1 or if I will finally have a little lady to help balance the tables. I'm pretty certain that it's a fellow, but I'm waiting to hear the final word. Then it's time to do the nursery!

I'll keep you posted!

We got a facelift and it's pretty obvious (oops)

Hey NWB readers! We got a facelift at Now What Baby. This should explain the recent small lack in posting because I have been hard at work trying to change things up. Nothing was wrong with the old way or anything but I get bored pretty easily. I also decided it would be so much better to go for a simple easy to scroll layout - going along with the less is more motto here. Now you can enjoy reading our newest posts with a whole lot less clicking and navigating. I hope that you like the new style as much as I do. Please note that the header is still under construction because it is kinda an eye sore for me right now.

You might have noticed that we no longer have the label cloud on the side bar - have no fear - you can still read NWB by the label system. All those pretty little pictures underneath the header labels are links to your favorite categories. If you hover over any picture it will tell you the label. We no longer have a giveaway tab on the menu bar but you can click the giveaway link on the sidebar instead.

Two pretty cool new features you can enjoy from us are the highlighted notes at the end of the post and a heart rating system. Now when you read a product review on NWB it will be rated on a scale of 1 -5 (5 the best) and you can read the highlighted "Simply Stated" section next to the heart rating to find out why it earned so many or so little. All of the Daily Photo posts will also have a "Simply Stated" section on the bottom with a favorite quote from the post or just a little something special I added.
Simply Stated: I really hope that you enjoy our facelift and would love to hear your thoughts!!

The Baby Makes Me Eat It - Is that even a valid excuse?

I know I am not alone with the weird pregnancy cravings and I thought that this being my 3rd pregnancy there wasn't anything I hadn't already experienced. I'm now on my 18th week of pregnancy (that picture is from a previous pregnancy) and my cravings are stronger than ever. I remember having a strawberry donut obsession with Connor, don't really remember wanting anything with Jackson, but I definitely don't remember it becoming a consuming past time.

I have NEVER been a healthy eater. I am a candy fanatic and habitually eat jalapeno chips in bed. I've never watched my weight and junk food just screams my name. I don't have a problem with vegetables but I have never been a fan of salads.....that is until this little bugger took control of my body. I cannot get enough of salads but they have to be prepared by me according to my standards. I will make a ginormous salad and actually lick the bowl. I am now wanting them for 3 meals and snacks too. It's really bizarre to me. I also can't get enough of the chili lime seasoned french fry sticks in a can and candy corn. I'm puzzled because I did not really care for these things before baby. I really believe the baby is making me eat it, or at least that's the excuse I use when someone catches me resembling a ravenous dog licking a salad bowl.

I did a little research trying to justify my eating habits but basically all I learned was that while most women have them - there is no proven correlation between what baby needs and what mommy craves. Apparently if that were the case mommy would crave be craving broccoli. The only justification I got is that when working 24/7 to grow a baby - it's only normal to crave more calories. Am I alone? Any other preggo ladies out there stuffing their face with something that never appealed to them before? Are you like me and sneaking candy corn under the covers so your children don't see? Don't be shy - share - it will make me feel a little less weird too!

Is this what you do when you poo?

Connor will one day hate me for the things I share on NWB but this one is just too funny to be kept to myself. Currently it has not occurred to him that his potty time is private time. He is constantly requesting an audience to chat with him as he goes number 2. He came out of the restroom yesterday and was O' so proud to show me a video he made during a potty break. I know that I myself have a large collection of similar films from my bathroom breaks (j/k). Anyway - from the mind of a 5 year old we present - Poo Poo Pastime

Simply Stated: "I feel a little gross sharing this with you but I think that it probably takes a lot more than this clip to disgust most moms. I just think it is funny - I know...I have issues."

It's the greatest show on Earth!

This weekend we got to go to the circus and we had lots of fun! It was right up Connor's alley. Jack on the other hand was really more interested in the candy, his light up sword, and the little temporary tattoo they put on his hand. Connor really liked the clowns, motorcycles, elephants, and the guy that rode a motorcycle up a slanted tight rope.
I was really surprised at how entertaining the show was for adults. It felt like they had tried to step up their game a bit. There were even these 3 women who could contort their body into positions that resembled something out of a horror movie.
Connor preferred to be up high on Dad's shoulders or sitting in his seat. He was scared of the large crowds - we can thank his temporary pre-k teacher for that one. She lives to tell the scary stories, who cares if they traumatize a 5 year old? Why would you want your child to live in the bubble where he doesn't expect some one to kill him in a public restroom or to kidnap him on the toy aisle? Why wouldn't you tell a young child a ghost story involving bones talking from a kid's closet? What normal person would think it was a bad idea to tell tales of tornadoes busting out windows and bringing kids to tears - the best time to share that story is during a tornado watch....right? Sorry - I am off on a tangent that involves Connor's fill in teacher while the one we love is out on maternity leave. I truly could rant and rave for hours about what she has said to terrify our child but I guess that is for another post - since this one is supposed to be about a traveling circus.

Facetime goes XXX - A warning to my fellow mommies

This Christmas Connor received an iPod Touch. He loves it and his little brother loves to sneak away with it. He really likes to Facetime his grandparents - which for those of you unfamiliar with this it's basically video chatting. This weekend while my husband and I were getting ready to head out for the day - Connor called his Gigi (my mom) on Facetime. They are in our bedroom chatting it up and Connor is enjoying showing off his fancy duds, as well as Jack's air guitar skills to his grandma. My husband is just stepping out of the shower and we hear Connor say "Hey Gigi - wanna see my dad naked?!?". My mother is immediately responding frantically "give your mommy the phone" as my husband rushes to shut the bathroom door. We narrowly avoided giving my mother an awkward image she would probably never be able to erase and learned a valuable lesson about Facetime - you just never know what your child will decide to share via video. Ahh....memories.

The new house and holidays past - photo blast!

So here is a bit of a photo recap of things that have been happening here at NWB over our long break. There's pictures of the new house (still working to decorate - more to come), Christmas, and Halloween.

Here goes Jackson as Spiderman in his school parade. He instantly stopped marching as soon as he spotted Mommy and Daddy in the crowd. We carried him back to his class - that is one of those thing where I don't know if we should hide or if it's important he knows we are watching...
Connor decided to dress as a cowboy for his school party. He had a blast trick or treating from class to class. He had us cracking up when they tried to teach the students the thriller dance. Connor is a little more robot than zombie but definitely an entertainer.

There was an endless amount of Halloween festivities since it landed on a Sunday. We went to a Halloween carnival on Saturday night - Connor went with a Buzz Lightyear get up this time. He likes to change things up - Jackson refused to let go of his muscles.

Here they are finally out on the real Halloween. Trick or treating was always one of my favorite activities being a true candy lover and all! We had a blast and no one terrified any of my kids this time around.

The parental Halloween shot - we're no fun because we didn't even attempt costumes. Next year Connor has decided that he will be Mr. Freeze, Jack will be Batman, I will be Batgirl, and Robert gets to be Robin (can't wait to see him sporting that get up!).

I loved this Santa pic! Connor wanted an electric train set and pretty much every other toy available. All Jack wanted was a lollipop and maybe a Buzz Lightyear.

There he goes on Christmas Eve in his new pjs! He was pushing the fake button on the top and his arms would pop out as wings. This is him flying to infinity and beyond.

Christmas morning mayhem - but it was by far one of the best ones yet!

This is the kitchen - probably my absolute favorite spots in the house - as long as I'm not cooking!

Our living room - Jack is refusing to smile for me. Apparently this photo op is imposing on his current episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

This is the first room we actually bought furniture for because the boys were begging for bunk beds. Now they have decided they would both rather sleep in the guest room....hopefully this is temporary.

I am loving having a basement! This is the playroom (toy paradise). They spend a great deal of time in this spot!

This is their reading nook - I want to have shelves mounted on all the walls and lots of floor pillows in this space. That is on my to-do list!

Our old couch is filling up the main basement space but for whatever reason this room rarely gets used at the moment.

Too funny not to share!

I may be the last one to this party but the site Parent's Shouldn't Text is absolutely hilarious. My mom just got an iPhone and thus far she has yet to send me anything that warrants a posting on the site but I can see it happening in the future (sorry mom - you know I love you). The first text I got from her did shock me - solely because we have been sending her texts since it was possible and none of them have ever been answered. I can only assume that the inbox on her old razor phone is still completely overloaded with unread texts from her loved ones. So you can see why her first text had me completely taken aback. My mom is very intelligent, she even has her masters, but for some reason the complex world of portable electronics has always confounded her - until this new wondrous phone showed her how simple a cell phone can be! She has mastered it all - she can face time, download apps, even text. It's pretty cool - aside from the fact she still has not realized that just like a phone call - a text also makes a pretty loud noise (so she probably should wait until after 6 am to send them). Any text received between midnight and 7 am should be an emergency. I know many mothers are awake at 6 am but me - I still haven't outgrown the procrastination that I was born with. I know that I can get both my boys and myself clothed, fed & out the door by 8:10 am so long as I haul myself out of bed by 7:38. I will lay there until the last second - I am NOT a morning person.

Anyhow - the texts on Parents Shouldn't Text will certainly make you laugh and they ended up keeping me sucked in for quite a while. It didn't even occur to me until after I finished reading that one day in the future my texts could be appearing on there. It's weird. Even though I am a parent - I still don't see myself in the stigma attached by children to "parents". In my mind - I'm still moderately cool, somewhat knowledgeable about whats in style, and definitely not embarrassing.....only a matter of time I suppose.... Here are a few text pics from Parents Shouldn't Text:

And you thought we'd forgotten you...

So it has been quite a while since we last posted here at NWB. Lets just say that I was a little burnt out from the day to day pressures of NWB. Running this site can become overwhelming at times and I think I was taking on far more than I could handle at once. I have learned to apply more balance to my NWB schedule and I missed you guys! I'm ready to get back to sharing some great giveaways and cool finds. As for the NWB team - we are now settled in a new house and enjoying the calm... (well as calm as life can be with two little guys). I'll share some pics of the new house and of the boys soon- they are growing so quickly! Connor is now 5 and Jackson is 2. Connor is in pre-k currently and he really likes it. Jackson is obsessed with Batman, wears a cape 24/7, and demands we call him Batman. You can constantly catch him starring at his reflection as he says in his best gruff voice - "I'm Batman". They continue to crack me up and amaze me each day. Jackson will not stop talking and he is quite the comedian. For example, yesterday I was trying to convince him to let me cut his hair which he was quite against. I resorted to bribery promising a lollipop if he let me repair his unruly mop - he looked up at me and instantly retorted "you got scissors?" Connor is unbelievably perceptive. We gave him his Valentine's Day gift early in hopes that he would entertain himself for a little while (we never said this to him though). Later that day he went to stay at my mother's for the night and when we picked him up she repeated what Connor had told her: "My mom gave me my Valentine's gift early so I would stop bugging them." Can't fool that one unfortunately.

As for other big news - we are expecting baby number 3 at our house! Shockingly - this little one will be born in August just like his big bros. So the boys can now look forward to having a birthday party split 3 ways and we can count on being totally broke that month. We have a strong feeling that it's another little guy but I will keep you posted when we see the results for sure. You can also expect to see some cool pregnancy finds and baby gear now that I'm back in that state of mind.

I've learned a great deal about what I can handle in regards to keeping up with the site. I can assure you that the posts will come much more frequently and as always I really appreciate how understanding and patient our readers are!

Make sure you check in tomorrow to enter our new giveaway for a $45 gift certificate to a seriously adorable girl boutique!

Photo Show

So this weekend we got our first and a very rare snow for our part of town. It was an ample downfall and the boys actually got to play in it. They both had a ball!!
He was eating a snowball and very proud of it.
The snow was to soft for sledding so the men in my life improvised.
Jackson really enjoyed helping to build a snowman.
Say hello to our frosty friend!
The inside of Jackson's bedtime tent.
Jack caught me peeking through his roof.
