Fun Felt + Giveaway!

Fun Felt ($2.99) - Think of it as a felt board that never runs out of options. Your child can chose from 90 individual shapes, colors, and letters. The app also lets your child control the size of each shape and the rotation of it. When they complete their masterpiece - it's super easy to share their picture and to save it to your device. Be on the lookout for the upcoming update that will include: Social Networking links (facebook, flickr, and twitter) and also the addition of some extra tools to make it even quicker and easier to create beautiful artwork!

Thoughts from a 5 year old: He will spend endless stretches constructing unique pictures and designs. In the beginning he made a lot of trains but now he has moved into faces, patterns, and more. I never cease to be impressed with the creative ideas he comes up with during his felting sessions.

Thoughts from a 2 year old: He really got in touch with his artistic side. After a short demo explanation from his older brother he was off and running. It was not too difficult for him to figure out but he did tend to create repetitive designs from one shape. No matter what his final product was - he was very proud of it!

Mom's Take: I liked that they have endless creative options within the app and the way it kept my children engaged. It's also nice for them to be able to build and design within an app - certainly cuts back on what I have to tote!
Simply Stated: This perfect for creative thinking and entertaining. It will definitely keep young minds amused for a good while!

The Three Pandas + Giveaway!

The Three Pandas ($3.99) - Picture the classic story of Goldilocks and the three bears and now make it Panda bear style. An interactive book filled with bright images of the adventures of a panda family and the little girl who enters their home. Although the tale is very close to the classic - it has an updated ending and a new take with the different animals. You can record your own voice telling the tale, tickle the pandas, and every page allows you to touch the characters and see them animated.

Thoughts from a 5 year old: He enjoyed the app and will chose to hear the story at night. He really liked recording his own voice to read the story!

Thoughts from a 2 year old: He is a big fan of the classic version of this tale and found it to be equally enjoyable panda style. He laughs and laughs when the pandas return home to find their home has been invaded by a little girl. He also loved being able to touch the pandas and see them almost come to life.

Mom's Take: It's a great story that never gets old to my kids. The fact that you can record your own voice and touch it to become even more involved in the story - makes it so much cooler than just reading a book.
Simply Stated: This is a great app to add to your reading library. It's perfect for bedtime, playtime, and travel!

myPocketBac Design Contest!

We are pretty obsessed with the PocketBac from Bath & Body Works at our house. Once they came out with those cute little stretchy cases to hook it onto our bags - we were more than hooked. My kids actually call it "hanitizer" and I swear they get as excited about going to pick out a new bottle as they do going to the toy store. It's very bizarre but I'm pretty happy to have them not only liking something so affordable but also something that helps prevent germs from getting into our lives. They like to hook it around their belt buckle and although they tend to go through it pretty quickly - the price is right for constant new bottles & scents (currently $5 for $5).

Right now Bath & Body Works has a fun new contest going to Design your own PocketBac. It's super easy to do - you simply click on this link and then follow the steps to design your PocketBac. You get to chose the scent, the label background, and drag/drop to add images to your label design. I got sucked into the fun but it was also a perfect summer distraction for my son. He thought it was really fun to create his own design.

It's definitely something worth trying out for yourself - winners will win a $500 shopping spree at Bath & Body Works and their design sold in stores!! After you finish getting in touch with your creative side, be sure to check out some of the latest arrivals. They have a patriotic collection complete with our favorite s'mores and apple pie.

Getting Crafty - Project Board

My latest obsession is the site Pinterest - if you haven't heard of it yet...let me warn you - it is consuming. I have now become craftier than ever, thanks to this idea filled site. I started keeping a list of all the projects I wanted to complete on our marker board. The problem with this - in addition to it being boring - is that everything tends to blur together and it is far from an organized method. Plus - my shorthand can get a bit confusing for anyone trying to participate. My project board also is filled with activities for the kiddos and since they can't read yet - it's not the best way to involve them as well.

I was looking at one of my favorite crafting sites - Brassy Apple and I saw her idea for creating a Summer Activity Board. It's not exactly the same as her brilliant plan but it certainly inspired me to give my project board a much needed facelift (I really love the way she used images on her board)! I tried to create a tutorial for my Project Board renovation - not sure if this will be helpful for anyone but please bear with me this being my first craft tutorial attempt and all.
  • Bulletin Board - I had an old one in my basement that I used for this project but they are under $10 at Walmart
  • Hanging Tags - If you can find tags without the hanging ties that is even better
  • Glue Sticks
  • Paint & Paint brush
  • Thumbtacks
  • Scissors
  • Print off thumbnail sized images of your projects (I added text to mine in Photoscape - which is a very easy photo editing software you can download for free)
I created mine on the computer and then I laminated it. The lamination is far from necessary - I just like to use my machine whenever possible :)
This was by far the most tedious part of the process but I was so pleased with the end result!
Then cut out each of your project images and use the glue stick to attach them to your tags. I cut of the string that would make them hang. My images were printed thumbnail size and fit almost perfectly to the tags. I few of them needed minor trimming. I put them on the tags because I wanted the paper to be thicker and I liked the look of them. Plus thanks to the built in hole I can easily take some down and put them on a ring when I'm running errands. This makes it much easier to remember what projects I wanted to buy supplies for while I'm out.
Then you simply place your idea tags onto your bulletin board with the thumbtacks. I used some color coded organization with my thumbtacks. The blue thumbtacks mean I need to buy some supplies before doing the project (this is perfect because I can grab some of the tags on the way to the store and easily know what I need to buy). The green, pink, and red are my way of putting projects into order of importance - you could also divide them by category. I'm thinking of going back and making one color kid projects, one my projects, and one honey-dew projects. The yellow thumbtacks are the products I am in currently in the middle of and the white are the ones I have complete. Yes - I currently only have one white thumbtack....baby steps.
I'm very happy with the end result - for me it makes projects much more inspiring to begin. I also plan to write the date completed on the back of the tags (hopefully there will be more than one to do so on).

Shape builder + Giveaway!

Shape Builder - The Preschool Learning Puzzle Game: Made up of over 146 different puzzles, this is an app to keep your young one busy for the long haul. Each puzzle contains anywhere from 5 - 10 pieces that snap into place when correctly inserted their spot. Once the puzzle is completed a licensed speech therapist says the item in the puzzle as it the real image is revealed. The app is designed to promote fine motor skills and cognitive thinking for your preschooler. ($0.99 for iPhone)

Thoughts from a 5 year old: Although he would whiz though the puzzles, he still enjoyed the app for short stretches of time. It's a bit to simple for him.

Thoughts from a 2 year old: This app could not be more perfect for him. He loves completing the puzzles and always says the puzzle item aloud along with the speech therapist. He is very proud that he can solve them all by himself and he enjoys putting them together for 30+ minutes each time he opens the app.

Mom's Take: I love this app. It is such a cool way to keep a preschooler busy. I can tell it has made a difference on his vocabulary and the way he pronounces his words. I also love having tons of puzzles for him to put together without having to keep track of all the pieces myself.
Simply Stated: In the preschool app market this is one of my all time favorites. It's the one you will recommend to friends and the one that will save your sanity on grocery shopping trips. Not to mention - it's a great learning app for your child!

Kids Fireman + Giveaway!

Kids Fireman: Let your child pretend to be the fireman with this adorably interactive app. They get to drive the firetruck, dress the fireman, climb the ladder, put out the fire, save the cat, and that's not even close to all. The bright colors and fun scenes will keep your child entertained for a good while. It's perfect for any child who wants to be a firefighter, but even if that's not their current career wish - this app is still highly engaging to pretty much any young child. ($1.99 for iPhone or iPad)

Thoughts from a 5 year old: He liked to try out every aspect of the app but he did quickly lose interest after completely them all. It's definitely better for children a little younger than him (he's almost 6).

Thoughts from a 2 year old: He was obsessed. He will play this game for ages. He loves to save the cat and climb the ladder. He just can't seem to quit. He also loves putting the fireman into his uniform. We quickly made sure to have this on every device we own because he is such a fan!

Mom's Take: I thought it was a really cute and smartly designed app. It's perfect for preschoolers. My son has played it so much that I permanently have the song stuck in my head. In fact I catch myself humming it throughout the day... "hurry hurry drive the fire truck"!
Simply Stated: It's a fun app for young children and it is very easy for them to figure out on their own. It's engaging and will be one they continue to enjoy.

Connect N Color + Giveaway!

Connect N Color HD: A fun way to sneak in a little number recognition and matching without your child even realizing their learning. Let your child match the numbers on the colors to the numbers in the drawing. Although the concept sounds simple, some of the puzzles can be a challenge. This app is perfectly geared toward ages 2 - 6 and is a great way to keep your young one entertained. ($1.99 for the iPad)

Thoughts from a 5 year old: This was right up his alley. He loves to color and when you add in the matching almost puzzle like aspect of coloring by number - he would get hooked on the game. He really could not stand to have to stop mid-picture.

Thoughts from a 2 year old: He also enjoyed the app but he definitely struggled a bit with matching the numbers to the colors. I could see a noticable improvement in his number recognization skills the more he played this app.

Mom's Take: I even had a good time coloring the scenes by number. I liked the way it drew my eldest in and I was impressed with the quick improvements I saw from my youngest playing the app. It does a great job of both challenging and engaging your child.
Simply Stated: It costs less then a coloring book and comes stocked with crayons + some sneaky learning. I certainly would deem this one worthy of your app collection.
